Celebrating another office opening (by smashing a cash register)

Welcome Poster copy

Last week was a busy one for the Vend crew in Toronto.

We threw a party, smashed a cash register, pretended we were Customs Agents.. oh and proved to anyone that timezones don’t matter – you can still play a round of international flip-cup with Venders across all our offices (that’s Auckland, Melbourne and San Francisco).

Our (one and only) Canadian office has been around for a year now. So celebrating this office opening has been a long time coming. Toronto was picked as our North American base of operations for Sales and Customer Success because of its amazing art scene and culture of retail. Right now we have a growing team of more than 40 staff on the customer service, sales, IT and channel teams.

But back to the party. We never like to do things without abit of quirk and surprise. The official office opening was themed around the Buzz Feed coined term, New Zanada, that (un)officially recognises New Zealand and Canada as the friendliest countries in the world. On arrival everyone was greeted by our friendly Customs Agents with an approved visa for entry into New Zanada. There were a few reports that some random pat-downs did take place, but luckily they were only reserved for Venders.

We had a awesome turnout from our local retailers, Vend friends and partners. To name just a few, it was great to see the likes of Offshoot, Digital Retail apps (thanks for coming Wendy!), our software partners, Moneris and representatives from Apple and Bluestar. A special thank you to Invest Toronto for supporting us and our venture from Day 1.

Renato Discenza, President and CEO of Invest Toronto couldn’t have summarised it better, “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Vend to Toronto.  Right from the start, our team has really enjoyed working with them on their venture into Canada. Here in Toronto, Vend has become part of a vibrant and flourishing technology sector that is second to none in Canada, and we wish them the best of success.”

To mark the occasion in typical Vend style, Vaughan (dressed as a lumberjack), smashed the cash register – but this time with an axe.

The cash register smashing is abit of an iconic stunt for us now to showcase how switching to a cloud-based point-of-sale system frees independent retailers to run their businesses efficiently and effectively from wherever they are.

The experience of New Zanada was complemented with delicious local cuisine and drinks. There were plenty of holiday snaps taken on the evening, check out the full vacation album below.

Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate with us on the night (and to all those who contributed to making this event a awesome success!!).
