Supporting the growth of small business and local economies

Small business is thriving in the US. It is thriving because of the hard work of independent retailers who are passionate about their business and believe in their local community. It is thriving because of the growing demand from patrons who feel the same way, rejecting large corporate chains in favour of shopping small and shopping local.

In the chaotic build up to Christmas, it is worth pausing to reflect on the role that small business plays, not just in local communities, but in the wider US economy.

Check out this infographic on the importance of shopping small:

  • Small businesses pay 44% of total US private payroll
  • 65% of new jobs in the 17 years to 2009 were in small businesses

Small and independent retail is also thriving because of social media and the emerging ecosystem of cloud apps, apps that offer sophisticated tools to sell, market, and manage any size of business. Businesses like Taylor Stitch in San Francisco, and Caribou Baby (below) in Brooklyn.

Vend is extremely proud to be part of this cloud ecosystem. Which is why we are pleased to announce two initiatives specifically in support of small business and local economies.

BALLE / Be A Localist

BALLE is a champion of local economies – the fastest growing business alliance of entrepreneurs, business networks, and local economy funders in North America. BALLE offers a wealth of educational resources and tools to help its member networks and businesses tap into the growing demand for local goods and services, to grow their businesses, improve productivity, and unleash community and crowd-sourced capital.

Vend is very pleased to announce that we have partnered with BALLE, to support their work, and help their member businesses flourish.

We’ll post details on specific projects soon. In the meantime, if you are interested to learn more about or join BALLE, please visit their website.

Small Business Saturday, Nov 24th

Next week, the US retail industry’s high selling season kicks off in earnest. The infamous Black Friday is on the 23rd, immediately followed by Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting small businesses all across the country by encouraging people to shop at small businesses in their communities.

To support small businesses in this busy time of year, we’ve partnered with our friends at Xero online accounting software & Shopify hosted ecommerce to offer a total retail solution, absolutely free until the end of 2012.

To find out more about this offer, and learn how to run a modern, multi channel retail business entirely in the cloud, visit vendhq.com/small-business-saturday.

And don’t forget this Saturday 24th November is a great opportunity to beat the Christmas rush, support your local economy, and shop small.
