Vend’s very first Block Party: Oh the things we learnt!

Block Party

Last Friday it was our mission to throw the raddest Block Party in the history of Block Parties with ping pong, pop up stores, wieners and cupcakes galore. The goal? To help build a strong retail community in the Melbourne area, and for everyone to make some new friends.

So, needless to say, the team was pretty excited when retailers by the dozens showed up on the night – ready to party and mingle their socks off into the wee hours.

We chatted, we shopped and we mingled, learning from our customers as much as they were learning from each other.

Amongst the more logistical lessons of the night (buy less food, more drinks) we picked up a few other more important messages too:

• Cubby houses filled with desserts are far better than platters filled with desserts.

• Despite our best efforts to keep the night’s conversations off business, retailers were just too eager to let a learning opportunity pass them by!

• And, ping-pong competitions can escalate quickly, particularly when there’s prizes in the form of beersies involved, and sometimes this happens…

“Please apologize to the staff member who copped a ping pong ball in the head. Digby (my son) tells me it was not intentional” – Clayton Thompson (Jaffle Jaffle).

The ever-changing world of retail is a marathon event for most, week in and week out. With new software, hardware, and just plain wares emerging weekly, it can all be a bit confusing.

The best solution it seems is to talk your heart out with other retailers and learn from their tips, tricks and handy insights:

“It was great to network with retailers and entrepreneurs in Melbourne. I’ve been seeking out that type of crowd for some time, being quite new to the scene, and I’m so glad someone has put together such a great meet up,”
– Mary Cruz (l’call Melbourne).

We’re super stoked that our Block Party could be a starting place for these conversations. So, a humongous thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a success, and for the feedback we’ve been getting which will make our next one even more rad!
