Run by husband and wife team Edson and Anne, the original Limbo store is one of the most recognized storefronts on Austin’s famed South Congress Avenue. Their stores stock their own Limbo jewelry, as well as work by other independent brands.

Since opening in 2003, Limbo has grown from its pop-up beginnings to two permanent retail locations, an online store, and a thriving wholesale business.

The Challenge

Limbo Jewelry needed a system to help manage their business while setting them up for future success.

Husband and wife team Edson Enriquez and Anne Rutt-Enriquez started Limbo Jewelry as a temporary pop-up shop, but they soon found themselves with a permanent store in Texas and regular weekend market stall in Chicago. Their sales may have been growing as quickly as their air miles, but they were struggling to manage the various elements of their business.

As manufacturers as well as retailers, they knew they needed a clearer view of inventory to help plan for demand. Their hectic travel schedule also meant they needed help managing their back office, which they could only focus on whenever they found the time.

This inspired a search for a partner that could help solve for their current problems, and help plan for future growth. Enter Vend and the BizTwister team, who helped Edson and Anne with a solution that focused on building the best experience for their customers. This included introducing a paperless checkout process and focusing on fast checkout times.

“We knew our systems were holding us back, that inventory, vendor management and event checkout was taking far too long. We knew we needed an upgrade to support our growth.”
Anne Rutt-Enriquez, Owner

The Solution

From decreased checkout times to improved supplier processes, Vend showed value for Limbo immediately, while also providing room for growth.

Limbo chose Vend as their point of sale and worked with BizTwister to get up and running. Almost immediately they saw a drastic drop in their checkout times. Their previous system required six to eight separate steps and processes for each checkout, sometimes taking up to two minutes to complete a transaction. Within weeks after switching to Vend, average transaction times were cut by 60%.

Vend’s easy to use system, with Square integrated payments, means in-store associates can now check customers out in 30 seconds - which includes the time it takes to talk to the customer and package their goods.

Limbo has also found their vendors love using Vend. With a roster of local artisans providing merchandise for the store, Edson and Anne were finding themselves bogged down by each vendor’s processes and systems. It didn’t take long to realize that Vend’s ordering system was way more flexible and easy to use, and their vendors quickly realized they were saving time too. “Our consigners have given us really positive feedback” says Anne. “They say we’re the most organized store they work with because we’re able to pinpoint exactly what’s selling, exactly what’s not selling.”

“First, there was a little bit of reluctance with vendors but after we tried Vend for a while, everyone was like, this is awesome! It works so much better.”

The Results

A second store opened, total control over inventory and vendors, and smarter decisions whether they’re in store or on the other side of the country.

With regular pop-ups and markets across the country, and a recently opened second store, Vend has continued to add value for Limbo. Their second Austin location might’ve required months of planning and preparation, but setting up Vend took very little time. “It was basically seamless” says Edson. “It literally took us 30 minutes to create a new store full of inventory” adds Anne. New staff training also only took minutes.

Whenever Anne and Edson travel to events and trade shows across the country, Vend travels with them. From their iPhones, iPads or laptops they can check what’s happening in their Austin stores from an exhibit in Chicago or in the airport on the way home. “That’s the beauty of the cloud and the real-time, you know?” Says Edson. “Every second of the day, as it goes by, you can take another snap of what’s happening in the present and the past.”

Easy reporting means they don’t have to be in store to see what’s selling, what’s making them money, and how they should plan their inventory. Together, Anne and Edson make decisions that help their bottom line and budget based on the insights they gain from Vend Reporting.

“Vend makes managing three outlets as easy as it was when we had one small store. And every store we use Vend in, we know we’re saving money, and making better informed decisions that are helping us grow faster.”
